DIY Slat Bench

I’ve been wanting a bench for the front sitting room since I finished it, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted it to look like. When I came across this slat bench, I really liked it but not for the price! Plus, I couldn’t find the right size for the wall I wanted it on. That’s the benefit of building things, you can customize it and it usually costs less.

I sketched out an idea and figured out what materials I’d need. I spent about $100 total.

Supplies:

1″x4″x6′ (4 of them)

2″x4″x8′ (8 of them)

Wood Glue

Nails or screws (I used a nail gun and 2″ nails)

Stain (if you want)

I’m starting to think I might need a pickup truck.

Cut List:

For the legs: 2x4s cut at 15″ (14 total)

1x4s cut at 18 1/2″ (12 total)

For the top: 2x4s cut at (as wide as you want your bench) I did 42″ (7 total)

I found it easiest to cut one to the length I wanted, then use it as a template for the rest. That way you aren’t taking the time to measure with the tape measure in between each cut.

Side note: Always cut just outside of your line. If you cut directly on your line, you are cutting into your measurement.

Once all of the cuts are made, it’s time to assemble the bench. I found it easier to make it on its side.

I laid the 2x4s down first, then added wood glue before laying the 1x4s down on each side (legs). Then, nail or screw them down. Next, add 2x4s for the top and legs and keep building in that pattern making sure to add wood glue in between each layer. This bench is heavy when it’s done so make sure to secure it with nails or screws as you go. The below picture shows the pattern.

This gives a good view of the top. The 1x4s create the gap in the top 2x4s.

I still need to sand it and stain it but I’m pretty happy with it so far!

It fits perfectly on this wall and gives us a perch to put shoes on without walking on the white rug.

I plan on staining it the same color as the shelves so it will all flow.
